Why Repetition with Motifs is the Secret Weapon of Experienced Designers

Designers rely on repeating details to quietly stitch a home together. When done well, this repetition creates a custom look that feels intentional, thoughtful, and far more polished than what most people can accomplish on their own. It’s often the reason a space has that elevated, “I-can’t-quite-put-my-finger-on-it” quality. In this blog, I’m sharing a few of my expert tips.

Tip #1: Use Architectural Details as Inspiration

Architectural details are an effortless place to begin repeating motifs. If a home features arches, bold lines, or distinctive paneling, I echo those shapes in subtle ways throughout the space. Maybe it shows up in the curve of a mirror, the shape of a doorway trim, or the profile of built-ins.

When paneling or millwork has strong vertical lines, I’ll carry that rhythm into furniture silhouettes or lighting choices. By repeating the home’s strongest architectural features, the rooms feel connected and the overall design feels grounded and intentional.

Tip #2: Select Subtly Coordinating Pieces

Motifs truly come alive when furnishings and fixtures subtly speak the same visual language. By paying close attention to lines, shapes, and proportions, I often select pieces that echo one another. The curve of a pendant light might mirror the base of a coffee table or the shape of a chair back.

Even the smallest details—like the profile of a cabinet pull or the frame of a piece of art—can help reinforce a motif. Inspiration can come from anywhere: architecture, nature, or even an heirloom piece. Once a motif is chosen, it becomes a guiding thread woven throughout the home.

Tip #3: Build Cohesion with Color

Color repetition is one of the easiest ways to build harmony. The 60:30:10 ratio is a great starting point to choose and balance colors, and from there, repeating key hues in accessories, textiles, and art brings consistency to each space. At the same time, I like to use small moments of contrast to define a room or highlight a special feature when it feels appropriate.

Carrying colors from one area to the next helps the home feel connected while still giving each room its own personality. When color repeats with purpose, everything feels calmer, more intentional, and beautifully cohesive.
